PeerApp Debuts Mobile Video and OTT Acceleration Solution
Content acceleration specialist PeerApp announced an offering for speeding video and other OTT (over-the-top) content to mobile devices. The PeerApp Mobile Edge Computing solution lets applications run closer to the end viewer, improving viewing quality and increasing the margin on mobile video.
Mobile Edge brings optimization features including content caching and DNS (domain name server) caching to the RAN (radio access network). The result puts content acceleration at the edge of mobile networks and works alongside PeerApp's existing mobile core solution.
The new offering is powered by Saguna, a specialist in mobile edge computing.
PeerApp will show Mobile Edge at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, starting March 2nd. The company is pitching it to mobile network operators, saying that with Mobile Edge their subscribers can watch services like Netflix and Amazon Prime without experiencing buffering or stalls.
Mobile video currently counts for nearly 30 percent of all video streamed today, PeerApp notes. It cites a Gartner report from January 2014 saying, “Mobile video is the main driver of overall mobile traffic and will account for about half of it in the next five years… it is likely that LTE, with its faster network speeds, will encourage subscribers to demand and consume even more video content, further exacerbating data congestion.”
