Report: Growth and Consolidation Coming to Transcoder Market

Transcoder technology, essential to online video providers, is expected to grow into a $300 million market by 2014, according to a report by In-Stat. That growth will be fueled by top-tier TV service providers purchasing multiformat equipment for multiscreen delivery services.

While North America will continue to be the largest region for encoders, says the report, EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) and Asia will continue to grow. Tomorrow's transcoders will need to keep up with a fractured world of formats, as they'll adapt to accommodate multiple codecs, network bandwidth characteristics, and devices screen sizes and resolutions.

The report, entitled Worldwide Market for Enterprise-class Multiformat Transcoders, also looks at market dynamics and includes worldwide revenue forecasts for file-based and live transcoding technology by region through 2014. It includes an overview of multiformat transcoder technology and vendor profiles for major players.

Besides growth, the report sees consolidation coming to the area as larger companies acquire smaller ones.

"The transcoder market is mostly comprised of small vendors that were formed to serve a particular segment," says Michelle Abraham, principal analyst. "In-Stat expects that some small vendors will be acquired by larger companies in the next few years in order to round out a company's product portfolio."

The full report is available for $3,495.
