Roku Introduces Direct Publisher for Code-Free Channel Creation

Create a streaming video channel that's available to Roku's network of over 10 million households, all without writing a line of code. That's the promise of Roku Direct Publisher, announced today.

Direct Publisher is an update to the company's publishing platform, one designed to make channel creation faster and easier. The solution works with such online video platforms as Brightcove, Ooyala, Kaltura, and JW Player. Publishers that have already created Roku channels with Direct Publisher include Above Average, Baeble Music, Cracked, FailArmy, Mashable, Rolling Stone, Super Deluxe, UPROXX, and Us Weekly.

To create a channel, publishers need to do little more than link a video feed. By using the platform, publishers automatically enter their content into Roku's search and discovery system, where viewers can search for titles and actors across apps, even if they don't have the apps installed.

A performance dashboard offers publishers detailed metrics, such as streaming minutes per channel, and the number of installs and uninstalls.

Along with the channel creation tool, Roku is introducing a video ad tool where it handles all of the ad sales. Roku notes that free, ad-supported viewing is the fastest growing area of its platform.

"The Roku Audience Network leverages the data and targeting capabilities of the Roku platform to deliver highly relevant video ads.," says Bill Shapiro, director of product management for the Roku OS. "This allows publishers who don’t have their own dedicated video ad sales team, or who haven’t focused on TV video ad sales, to more effectively monetize their content."
