Rovi Intros DivX Plus Streaming at IFA
Rovi, the global company perhaps best known for its content discovery guides, has launched DivX Plus Streaming today at the IFA show in Berlin. Pitched to makers of HDTVs, Blu-ray Players, smartphones, and game consoles, it offers 1080p high-definition adaptive streaming and quick play. Rovi expects to see it in shipping commercial products by the holiday season.
DivX Plus Streaming includes features more associated with Blu-ray Discs, including DTS Audio, subtitles, multiple languages, and smooth fast forward and rewind.
"DivX Plus Streaming is designed to help make it possible to bring a more advanced streaming experience to over-the-top services," says Corey Ferengul, EVP of products at Rovi.
Rovi built DivX Plus Streaming on the core DivX technologies. In includes smooth resolution scaling to keep viewers from encountering buffering problems as network conditions change. Its built-in DRM supports electronic sell through, timed rentals, and subscriptions. It can be used for streamed, downloaded, or side-loaded content for both online and offline viewing.
"The inclusion of features such as smooth fast-forward, quick stream start, and subtitle support are real consumer pain points with existing streaming solutions and will help differentiate DivX Plus Streaming in the market," says Colin Dixon, senior partner at The Diffusion Group.
