Sling TV Gets Attractive Additions with AMC, IFC, and Epix
When Sling TV launched last month, StreamingMedia.com's biggest criticism was that the 13 channels in the basic package offered little but tired reruns and home improvement shows—not the right content for the purported millennial target customer. Today, Dish Network—which owns Sling TV—helped remedy that. The $20 per month basic package now includes AMC and IFC programming. Subscribers can watch live streams of both networks and soon will get video-on-demand content from both. This brings shows like The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, and Portlandia to Sling TV, which is exactly what the service needs.
Dish has also announced a new add-on package called Hollywood Extra. For an additional $5 per month, subscribers will get four Epix premium movie channels and the Sundance TV channel. A replay feature lets them watch aired content up to a week afterwards. That's a nice feature in a service that lacks a cloud DVR. This package will get a library of video-on-demand content soon.
Sling TV is the first streaming bundle to hit the market, and is being closely watched to see if there's a market for low-priced cable and satellite alternatives. It also offers add-on packages that deliver more sports, children's, and news programming.
