TiVo Unwraps Two Devices for Streaming TV Content
Can two innovative, flexible home TV devices help restore TiVo's reputation? It's been a long time since TiVo led the market with a fanatical fan base, back when it's name became a general term for DVR. However, hot off a partnership with Virgin and with a recent subscriber gain to its credit, TiVo finally has momentum in the right direction. It's a great time, then, for compelling new products.
At The Cable Show in Boston, Massachusetts, TiVo showed two promising home TV devices. The first is an IP set-top box that can stream content to secondary TVs within the house. The set-top box will work with TiVo's Premiere Q gateway device, letting secondary sets stream live, on-demand, and recorded TV programs.
The second product is TiVo Stream, a compact box that can transcode video and stream it to tablets or other mobile devices. Stream can take content stored on TiVo Premiere or Premiere Q DVRs and stream it to multiple devices at once, all without interrupting playback on the main television. Owners can even transfer recorded content to their mobile devices to watch when away from home.
TiVo declined to give pricing or availability information, but said it would release more details in the coming months. After that, we'll see if the company can reignite that old TiVo passion from years gone by.
