Vimeo Announces Program to Fund and Support Female Filmmakers

Article Featured Image

With diversity in the film industry a major news story, Vimeo chose an opportune time to announce its Share the Screen initiative. Share the Screen is meant to help close the gender gap in the movie industry by giving an assist to projects led by women.

Share the Screen will work in three ways. First, and most importantly, Vimeo is putting its money where its mouth is. The video-sharing site will invest in five female-led projects in 2016. This is an increase from the two it funded in 2015. Besides giving money, Vimeo will help out with marketing support and, naturally, the finished works will get worldwide distribution though Vimeo.

The initiative will also create educational seminars throughout the year at Sundance Institute workshops with the goal of creating change in the industry. Finally, the Vimeo site will spotlight female-led projects in a blog and in a list of female-directed titles available on-demand.

Vimeo kicked off the initiative yesterday at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah with the announcement that Darby Forever, it's first original short, is now available for pre-order. Darby Forever stars and was written by Saturday Night Live cast member Aidy Bryant. It will be available from Vimeo on February 18 for $2.99.
