WD Announces iPhone, iPad Apps for Mobile Content Access
External storage company Western Digital (WD) continues its efforts in the home entertainment space with the announcement of two apps for the Apple iPad and iPhone: WD 2go and WD 2go Pro. Both make it easy for users to access their stored media files while outside the home.
The apps work with WD's My Book Live service, which the company calls a personal cloud solution. The My Book Live drive (which starts at $159.99 for 1TB) connects to a home network and creates a shared storage space for all users on the network. Files can be accessed even when the home computers are off through the WD2go.com site or through iOS or Android apps.
While WD is announcing the apps now, the WD 2go app has been in the iTunes store for a month now. The WD 2go Pro app was added yesterday. The basic WD 2go app is free and can stream audio and video files, or open documents and presentations.
The WD 2go Pro app is $2.99 and adds "clipping," where users can download files to their devices for offline access. It also adds content sharing via email, printing, and the ability to add a four-digit passcode.
"With the new WD 2go mobile apps and WD's My Book Live personal cloud storage, consumers now have a simple and fast way to securely store, share, and access all their digital content from their mobile devices wherever they are." says Jim Welsh, executive vice president and general manager for WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups.
