Yelp Adds User-Submitted Videos Powered by Brightcove, Zencoder

Local business review site Yelp has added a user-submitted video feature that lets reviewers upload clips from 3 to 12 seconds long from their phones. Brightcove Zencoder is handling the encoding, while Brightcove Video Cloud is responsible for the upload and distribution. The service only works with the Yelp iPhone app at the moment, but Yelp plans to add Android phone support in the near future.

Yelp actually rolled out the video feature to its Elite users earlier this month, but now it's available to everyone with the iPhone app. Videos will only be viewable through the app. Yelp suggests that reviewers use the feature to record a business's scenery, setting, ambiance, and services.

“This is an exciting time in the evolution of Yelp, and the addition of videos proves the company’s commitment to giving its users and businesses around the world the best possible experience,” says Anil Jain, senior vice president and general manager for media at Brightcove. “We are proud to partner with Yelp and look forward to working together to add more video features and offerings in the future.”

Yelp registered 132 million monthly visitors in the first quarter of  2014. The company notes that its users upload over 23,000 photos from mobile apps each day, and that readers spend 2.5 times longer on business pages with images.
