YouTube Launching Original Works for Subscribers on February 10
YouTube begins a new chapter on February 10, when it debuts four original video productions for its YouTube Red subscribers. YouTube Red debuted in late October 2015, and access to original programming is a big part of its appeal. YouTube turned to fan favorites such as PewDiePie and production company Rooster Teeth to create the exclusives.
On the 10th, YouTube will release one series and three movies to YouTube subscribers. Scare PewDiePie is a series in which the top YouTube star encounters scary situations inspired by video games. Lazer Team, created by Rooster Teeth, is an action comedy where four unlikely heroes use alien tech to save the planet. Dance Camp, by AwesomenessTV, is about discovering oneself through dance; while A Trip to Unicorn Island from Astronauts Wanted, is a documentary about YouTube star Lilly Singh's world tour. (Lazer Team has been in theaters since January 27, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 52 percent.)
YouTube has created a channel to highlight YouTube Red originals. The company plans to debut more original productions later this year. A YouTube Red subscription goes for $10 per month, and the first month is free. YouTube has also created a support page that lets viewers around the world know when YouTube Red originals will be available in their locations (occasionally for purchase).
