Once Celebrated Video App Viddy Prepares to Cease Operations

When startups run into roadblocks, they need to pivot and find a new direction. And when that new direction doesn't work out, they might just need to close up shop.

Viddy, the "Instagram for video" app that enjoyed 50 million users in the days before Instagram offered video, is now gone from both the iTunes App Store and Google Play. In a blog post, the company noted that the app will cease all operations on December 15. Users have until then to visit Viddy.com and download videos they want to keep.

It's been a wild ride for Viddy. After the aforementioned success in 2012, the app's numbers petered out. The company changed its name to Supernova in late 2013 and created the new apps Clique and Epic (which are also now closing with Viddy). A few months later, Supernova was acquired by multichannel network Fullscreen for $20 million. Six months after that, Otter Media bought a controlling interest in Fullscreen.

While Viddy is now history, the Supernova team believes they have another pivot left. Without giving any hints, they announced in the blog post that they will now "focus singularly on something new and exciting… to redefine entertainment for today’s youth." Sounds ambitious. Can't wait to see it.
