Stream Live Video App Hopes to Make a Splash During SXSW

Meerkat might be the most buzzed about app at this year's South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, but competitor Stream is hoping to carve out a little buzz for itself. Both apps do similar things, letting users create instant live video streams from their phones that they can broadcast to followers. Stream differs in how it integrates chat and collects recently-shot video.

Last week, StreamingMedia.com reported that Twitter has purchased Periscope, a live video app still in closed beta testing, for up to $100 million. On Friday, Twitter cut off Meerkat's access to Twitter's social network, so that Meerkat users won't be automatically connected to accounts they're already following on Twitter. Also, when a user creates a Meerkat stream, they don't automatically send a notification to their Twitter followers.

It would be a mistake to call Stream a new entrant in the race, as it actually launched in April 2014. Stream lets users stream live video, save videos to their mobile devices, and join chats while creating or watching a live stream. It also lets them save short clips as "Reels" to share for 24 hours. Unlike Meerkat, Stream is a finalist for a 2015 SXSW Interactive Innovation Award, in the Innovation in Connecting People Category. Winners will be announced tomorrow night. The Stream PR team is on the ground in Austin giving out phone tripods to people streaming and chatting with the app.
