IP Traffic to Reach 2 Zettabytes by 2019; 80% Will Be Video

Internet traffic will triple between 2014 and 2019, reaching 2 zettabyles. (A zettabyte is 1021 or a billion terabytes.) IP video will comprise 80 percent of that. These projections come from Cisco's 10th annual Visual Networking Index, released today.

IP video currently comprises 67 percent of all online traffic, so not only will the amount of video increase, but it will increase faster than other types of online traffic. Cisco sees this rise coming from advanced video services, such as ultra-high definition (UHD) video and 360-degree or spherical video. Demand for advanced video will be strong from households, businesses, and mobile users. Providers that can offer excellent quality, convenience, content, and pricing will succeed, Cisco advises.

In 2019, IP video will make up 84 percent of consumer traffic and 63 percent of business traffic, the VNI predicts. HD and UHD video combined will make up 63 percent of internet video traffic by 2019. Video-on-demand traffic will double by 2019.

Almost 1 million minutes of video will cross the network every second in 2019.

The use of 4K TVs is set to expand dramatically. In 2014, 9.9 million 4K TVs were installed and in service. In 2019, 371.5 million 4K sets will be installed and in service. To stream all this video, broadband speeds are set to double. Cisco predicts that global broadband speeds will reach 42.5Mbps in 2019, up from 20.3Mbps in 2014.

“Network complexity is growing significantly due to the wide range and diversity of devices and connections (machine-to-machine or M2M) as well as an expanding mix of low- and high-bandwidth applications," notes Thomas Barnett, Jr., Cisco's director of service provider thought leadership. "Effectively supporting such a broad array of endpoints and services represents significant opportunities and challenges for service providers. Network intelligence and flexibility are essential attributes that will enable carriers to extend their reach (via mobility), scale to various form factors (from M2M to 4K video), enhance network performance (for customer retention and to attract differentiated content partners), and effectively monetize their evolving service models (from metered device usage to monthly flat fee M2M contracts).”
