LiveU: 2016 Online Video Industry Predictions
It’s becoming clear that the development and deployment of IP-based infrastructure on the production side is only going to increase as we move forward. IBC 2015 was full of discussions about this.
The pace of IP deployment is quite fractured geographically. Take a look at the rollout of HD, or even digital, on a global basis and it’s immediately clear how disparate different markets can be. It will be the same with IP production technologies. Yes, you can argue that at this stage there’s more talk than action, but behind the scenes key broadcast manufacturers are now spending a far more significant proportion of their R&D budget on IP production and playout technologies.
We’ve already been involved in a ground-breaking, IP-based production project: Sky News’ coverage of the UK general election in 2015. Because of the scale of the coverage—delivering 138 live IP feeds from 150 key counts and constituencies countrywide using LiveU’s cellular uplinking technology—it was clear from the outset that Sky News could not simply add 138 additional baseband video sources to its existing studio matrix for capacity reasons. And there would have been the associated increase in cost, space, and power. Sky News worked with us to develop a completely new, IP-based delivery solution that took advantage of ad-hoc cloud infrastructure and heavily utilized software such as Wowza and FFmpeg.
Bringing this full circle, we believe the project with Sky News truly illustrates the possibilities that our technology opens up and we are excited to see how this translates across coverage of the U.S. presidential election in 2016.
At the same time—and we are leading the way with LiveU Solo—we see the online market increasingly embracing live video. This "plug and play" live streaming bonded solution fits seamlessly with web streaming workflows, connecting automatically to Wowza Streaming Cloud™, as well as other popular CDNs, OVPs, and YouTube Live, making live video simple. We’re excited about 2016 and beyond.
