Epiphan Video: 2016 Online Video Industry Predictions
Until recently, video distribution and consumption problems were among the biggest challenges facing the streaming industry. However with on-the-fly multi-device transcoding and established content distribution networks, it’s simple to reach viewers with live and on-demand video no matter their location or viewing device.
The next challenge is removing barriers for high-quality content creation.
We will see significant investment in adapting tools, products, and services from the traditional broadcast industry to the needs and competencies of everyday users. Everyone will be empowered to virtualize their events with professional results, creating a worldwide internet of events.
Here are the ways I see this happening.
1. Unattended live production:
Eliminating the expertise and costs associated with camera operators and video editors, self-producing and unattended live production solutions will act as local content aggregators and will programmatically choose the best possible aspects for the streaming production.
2. Simplified, tailored workflows:
Ease of use will be critical. Solutions for producing live events (whether recording or streaming) will target specific use cases and will therefore require less integration know-how. Cohesive end-to-end integration of post-processing, CDN, cloud-based storage, and OTT playout options will be integral parts to this solution.
3. Post-production in the cloud:
Companies will refine cloud computing tools to provide straightforward, inexpensive post-event editing, clip extraction, and social media integration. At the same time, the cloud will be leveraged to provide low-cost alternatives to post-producing large ISO files into engaging video-on-demand assets.
With high-quality content creation capabilities available to everyone, the video production value seen at large conferences and professionally-produced sporting events will be possible for all the smaller-scale events that happen daily, around the world. The days of requiring substantial budgets and large, experienced production crews to create credible, watchable content from live events will be behind us.
