2016 Online Video Predictions: An Introduction
"Red skies at night, sailors' delight."
Did you ever wonder how that saying came to be? Did you know that Shake speare said something along those lines in “Venus and Adonis”? How about in the Bible, in Matthew 16:2–3, where Jesus said, “When in evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather today; for the sky is red and lowering.”
Now, I’m no playwright, but it seems to me that you can set expectations best from experience. Simply put, a red sky at night is the result of a high concentration of dust particles, which usually means a stabilising high pressure system is coming from the west.
Looking into the future and predicting what was next for the online video industry has been a challenge over the years, because there really has been no stability. Until now.
"Red skies at night, streamers' delight"
There is such buying pressure in our industry right now, it truly is sellers’ delight. It’s also the highest tide for all ships on this sea. We are now at a point where streaming is no longer merely an option for premium content, it’s a must. Don’t get me wrong; there’s still a lot of work to be done on the technical and business ends. But if you asked me what 2016 holds for the industry, my answer would be, simply, “Prosperity.”
Every year, we ask “captains of our industry” to join us in predicting the ebbs and flows of our industry as they navigate it firsthand. I’m proud to present to you this year’s Executive Predictions. They're all listed in "Related Articles" below, or you can download the entire batch as a PDF.
