JW Player Intros Video Recommendation System to Drive Engagement

Once publishers have attracted viewers to their site, getting them to stick around longer is the next goal.

Video player and platform company JW Player introduced a recommendation system today that creates personalized and updated suggestions for each viewer. Built entirely in-house, the system can create playlists based on trending videos (using real-time viewer activity to show what's hot at that moment), similar videos (recommending videos based on the viewer's behavior as well as content within the video), and search (where the playlist is based on keywords or an in-video search).

JW Player claims its recommendation engine can increase advertising revenues by 50 percent by boosting views and engagement. The feature is also a time-saver, it says, as publishers use fewer resources to create and manage their playlists.

JW Player's recommendations can be used in the JW 7 Player Discovery Overlay, mobile and over-the-top apps, or customized widgets.

Penske Media Corporation, which owns WWD.com and Variety.com, trialed the feature and doubled its video plays from 200,000 per month to 400,000, receiving 100,000 incremental ad impressions.

“JW Player’s data-driven recommendations tools were easy to implement and when we paired them with auto-advance, we saw immediate engagement and revenue gains,” said Gino Orlandini, director of video at Hollywood Life, a Penske Media property.
