Audible to be Mac Compatible

Macintosh users will have one less compatibility problem to complain about in a few weeks when Audible launches the first phase of compatibility for streaming and download using Macintosh computers. Audible.com (www.audible.com) offers spoken word content for streaming and download for both desktop and mobile platforms.

Originally the company developed a DRM system on a PC platform to protect the rights of publishers. They have been working to develop a secure system for the Macintosh platform and in mid-February introduction, Mac users will be able to access any of the 28,000 hours of digital audio content from audible.com using RealPlayer from Real Networks.

"We are absolutely thrilled to announce our initial phase of Mac compatibility," said Robert Kramer, senior vice president and chief technology officer, Audible, Inc. "Upon the introduction of our Mac service within the next two weeks, we will be welcoming Mac users to search, shop, explore and purchase audio at audible.com for the first time. Although this first phase of compatibility will not include mobility options for the Mac, we are fully committed — during 2001 — to delivering a mobility solution for handheld and portable digital audio players, just as we have for PC use. We look forward to serving the culturally-attuned."

At launch, the requirements for listening to audible.com content using a Mac computer will be Mac OS 8.6 or higher and RealPlayer version 7 or higher. Mac users will be directed from the audible.com site, to download a self-installing plug-in that enables the playback of digital audio content.
