Digital Lava Partners with Network Appliance

Digital Lava (www.digitallava.com) and Network Appliance announced they were teaming up to create a bundled streaming media solution for enterprise customers.

Application services company Digital Lava provides video publishing services for creating on-demand presentations and training applications. It incorporates video and audio content with text, graphics, PowerPoint and other multimedia. Network Appliance will be offering Digital Lava's services as an optional part of the NetApp enterprise content delivery network (CDN) bundles announced earlier this week.

Bob Greene, chairman and CEO of Digital Lava said the alliance is a "perfect blend."

"Network Appliance and Digital Lava share the common vision of providing enterprises with the technology infrastructure and software to enable streaming applications for e-learning and corporate communications that are sensitive to this time of scrutinized IT spending," said Amit Pandey, senior director of content delivery marketing at Network Appliance. "Our combined solutions will provide greater returns on IT investments without compromising communications initiatives that make companies and their employees successful."

On Tuesday, Digital Lava released a new version of its on-demand media communications format, called Digital Lava View. It allows users with new features including the ability to pause, rewind, and fast-forward through presentations. They can also bookmark specific areas in the presentation, as well as enter and save personal comments or notes. New search capabilities have also been added.

According to David Florence, Vice President of Marketing at Digital Lava, the new Digital Lava View interface and features are a reflection of "Digital Lava's steadfast commitment to addressing client needs and market feedback through timely and ongoing product updates and enhancements."

Digital Lava has been going through some rough times, lately. In March, the company initiated an internal investigation to correct misstated revenue figures from last year, and at the same time implemented layoffs of 22 percent of its staff.

"As a result of an investigation completed in March 2001, we have instituted new operational controls and specific lines of reporting and responsibility designed to help ensure strict compliance with applicable revenue recognition and other accounting guidelines," said CEO Greene. "Additionally, with our recently announced reduction in work force, we have streamlined our operations. We are focused on increasing operating efficiencies in order to decrease losses while continuing to increase product and services revenue."

In reporting its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2000 earnings this week, Digital Lava reported revenues of $4.6 million as compared to $1.5 million for 1999. The company attributed the increase in revenue to increases in of its vPublisher software solutions. For the fourth quarter, revenue was $862,192, a slight decrease of 6 percent from $916,241 a year ago.
