Amazon Prime Gains 2K CBS Titles for Streaming
Amazon's Netflix competitor, Amazon Prime, gained a needed boost to its library today, as Amazon licensed 2,000 TV episodes from CBS. Neither company disclosed the cost of the deal.
The agreement brings full seasons of 18 shows to Amazon Prime, including "The Tudors," "Numb3rs," "Medium," the complete "Star Trek" franchise, "Frasier," and "Cheers." Amazon's Instant Video service will gain episodes from dozens of CBS shows later this summer.
"Our new deal with CBS makes Amazon Prime even better for customers," says Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO. "We're excited to add thousands of popular CBS programs to our already great selection, all of which stream at no additional cost to Amazon Prime members."
Amazon Prime is actually a membership-based shipping program that offers customers free two-day shipping on eligible purchases for $79 per year. Starting in February, 2011, Amazon added video instant streaming as a part of Amazon Prime.
With the new CBS titles, the Amazon Prime library now includes over 8,000 movies and TV shows.
"Amazon has created one of the most popular consumer marketplaces in the world, and we are very pleased to make these titles available to their Instant Video and Prime customers," says Leslie Moonves, president and chief executive officer for CBS. "This new agreement represents another meaningful way for us to realize incremental value for CBS's content."
