Cisco, RealNetworks, Adobe, Harmonic: Adaptive Streaming and HTTP

"We believe this is a game-changer in the marketspace," said John Bishop, director of strategic initiatives for Cisco, talking about adaptive streaming and HTTP delivery. Bishop was speaking at a webinar hosted by StreamingMedia.com. Other presenters included Amol Shukla, principle engineer for RealNetworks, Kevin Towes, senior product manager for Adobe, and Moore Macauley, director of multi-screen products for Harmonic.

We're going through a transformation, Bishop told the audience. He explained how we started with postage stamp-sized 240x180 RealNetworks video 10 years ago, grew to 320x240 Adobe Flash video five years ago, then to the more TV-like 1280x720 open standards video we have now.

The Beijing Olympics were a transformative time for online video, Bishop noted. The 592x336 Silverlight Olympic video marked the first time that HTTP video was streamed at scale, and marked the birth of adaptive bitrate.

"We're continuing to close the gap between a broadcast experience and a broadband experience, and one of those gaps that we continue to make year-on-year progress toward is bandwidth increases," said Bishop.

With even more resolutions coming in the future, Bishop said that publishers would need to manage their quality. Cisco's method is to look at bits per pixel per second. The resulting number should be between 4 and 6, he offered.
