EdgeCast Talks OpenCDN, its Federated CDN Solution
Attendees at the recent Content Delivery Summit in New York City got to hear Andrew Lientz, vice president of managed services for CDN EdgeCast, talk about how his company is already offering a federated CDN for commercial traffic. Lientz first offered a definition of CDN federation.
"The definition of federated CDN I want to use to establish this is carrier, CDN, and cloud operators have built a lot of capacity out there -- EdgeCast included, and some of our other partners -- and there's a promise to combine all that, and that's what people have been talking about a bit today," said Lientz. "EdgeCast are now providing this CDN federation we're calling OpenCDN to content owners today."
Lientz then explained the benefits of combining CDNs.
"There are three CDNs that do not interconnect," said Lientz. "They're on separate networks, they run on separate hardware, they have separate control plans. They are controlled by separate companies, and the idea here is when you combine all of these together, instead of offering 2TB per second on these various networks, we can actually grow it into a much larger network that's a seamless experience to the end-users or to the content owners themselves. This is what we consider a federated CDN: the idea of combining the capacity of independently run and operated CDNs."
