Social networking allows entertainers and fans to communicate directly, and now Viacom, which owns MTV, VH1, and Comedy Central, among other channels, is carrying that networking into video conversations. Viacom is partnering with social video platform Spreecast to create ongoing experiences that connect fans and stars.

Prior to this announcement, Viacom has created Spreecast video chats for some of its properties including "Very VH1," a daily entertainment talk show; "Love and Hip Hop Atlanta," and Logo TV. Those sessions were successful, pulling in viewers from around the world, and led to Viacom deciding to create an ongoing partnership.

The Spreecast video chat console lets thousands of fans stop in, and requires no special equipment or software beyond a web cam and a browser. Attendees can either video chat or join a text discussion. Producers can control everything shown on the screen. The console also includes Facebook and Twitter access. Chat sessions are recorded and can be replayed and shared.

"We're thrilled to collaborate with Viacom given their innovative approach to media. Viacom and their brands, such as VH1, really understand how to bring quality entertainment experiences to viewers in fresh and engaging ways," says Jeff Fluhr, co-founder and CEO of Spreecast. "Working with a media company of this caliber certainly reinforces our belief that interactivity and social media are increasingly important in traditional media."
