Sling Media Intros Two Models, Adds Wi-Fi, HDMI, Personal Content

Sling Media is evolving the Slingbox with two models introduced today, the Slingbox 350 and Slingbox 500. The higher-end of the two, the Slingbox 500, includes Wi-Fi connectivity, an HDMI port, and the ability to display personal photos. The inclusion of wireless should do a lot to entice shoppers who like Slingbox's ability to stream television content, but didn't want to rely on a wired connection.

The company calls the Slingbox 500 (shown here) the foundation for a new series of set-top boxes. It uses a new technology called SlingProjector to let owners display their personal photos on their TV. Using SlingProjector requires purchasing the SlingPlayer iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone app, and having the phone and Slingbox 500 on the same Wi-Fi network. Sling Media notes that a firmware update sometime in the future will let owners stream their videos to their TVs, as well.

Both the Slingbox 350 and the Slingbox 500 include 1080p video streaming to compatible devices. The company is also updating its SlingPlayer mobile apps. The apps are now $14.99, a half-off promotion to celebrate the product launch.

Both new Slingbox models will be available Sunday, October 14, at Best Buy's stores and site, Amazon.com, Slingbox.com, and other retailers. The Slingbox 500 lists for $299.99 and the Slingbox 350 for $179.99.
