Sony Brings Online Store to the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Brazil

Sony announced today that it's bringing its online entertainment store to shoppers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. Sony began testing the store in December, 2012, in Europe, and is now expanding to new markets. The store makes shopping more convenient for owners of the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, or PlayStation Portable especially.

The store (which, curiously, doesn't have a specific name; Sony calls it "the new online store") is heavy with gaming content. Sony says it has over 20,000 pieces of game-related content, including downloadable games, add-ons, and themes. Not just about gaming, though, the store also includes over 100,000 movies, videos, and TV shows. Sony isn't giving  a number for just the movies or saying whether or not it has titles from all the major studios.

Shoppers can purchase games, movies, and TV shows through a browser on a Windows or Macintosh computer, then download their purchases directly to their PlayStation devices (getting that content from the My Downloads section of the PlayStation Store). They can also watch purchased movies and TV shows on Windows computers using the Media Go application, or on Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets.

Sony is already planning improvements for the store. It plans to add advanced recommendations in the near future, as well as automatic remote downloading of purchased content and browsing on smartphones and tablets.
