Ericsson to Debut CDN at MWC, Emphasizes Video and Mobility

Getting a jump on Mobile World Congress news is Ericsson, which announced that it will launch a content delivery network (CDN) called the Ericsson Media Delivery Network, when the conference opens in Barcelona, Spain, on February 25.

Citing the growing importance of mobile connectivity for more than just communications, Ericsson says the CDN was designed to address a worldwide consumer movement toward broadband mobility. The CDN has been created "to unite the delivery of managed and unmanaged content over fixed and mobile networks by leveraging Ericsson's advanced packet core and radio capabilities with converged cache, combined with new management and service exposure layers for intelligent control and business model enablement."

Since the demand for premium video content over mobile connections is growing, Ericsson's CDN is optimized for video delivery. Ericsson says operators can achieve profitable video delivery, while content providers and enterprises will appreciate the guaranteed quality.

Mobile devices serve as televisions, banks, and conference rooms, says Ericsson senior vice president and head of business unit support solutions Per Borgklint. According to a mobility report recently created by Ericsson, mobile data traffic will grow 12 times by 2018. The Ericsson CDN is designed to go beyond traditional CDNs, Borgklint says, and offer operators a unified platform for efficient and optimized delivery.

At MWC, Ericsson will show use cases that include consolidating content delivery to mitigate network impact, the benefits of caching over-the-top content, and delivering on-demand content and linear content to increase operator content sales.
