Montreal-based end-to-end video solutions company Haivision introduced Calypso today, a media capture and management platform aimed at the higher-education and enterprise markets. Calypso lets users monitor multiple live sessions and choose the ones they'd like to record. Content can then be shared on-demand or live.

The Calypso platform is able to monitor and record up to 50 HD streams at one time. Video is recorded in H.264. Users can add metadata in real-time, using the HotMarks system Haivision introduced with its Furnace IP video system.

Use cases for Calypso include any training, assessment, or simulation activities where a central administrator needs to keep track of multiple sessions. One possibility is psychiatry skills reviews, suggests Haivision's chief marketing officer Peter Maag, or cadaver labs in medical training. The user can monitor multiple sessions, choose what to record, and share aggregate highlights with a class afterwards. Other use cases include speech pathology or dentistry training. In the enterprise, it could be used to monitor and record focus group or consumer research sessions.

Calypso can also be used to monitor and record simulations that involve multiple cameras. Maag suggests that nuclear power plant simulation as one example. Live video can be mixed with other contributed video source.

Haivision will display Calypso for the first time at the upcoming NAB show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
