Vevo, Songza, RealNetworks Announce Chromecast Support
Google Chromecast, the set-top box without the box, got a little holiday cheer from Vevo, Songza, and RealNetworks, all of which announced Chromecast support.
Music-lovers in the U.S. tired of looking for music videos on MTV can now cast them to their televisions using the updated Vevo iOS or Android app, or by using the Chrome browser on a computer. Vevo notes that its apps work in the background, so people can use other apps or make a call while casting to their televisions. The Android app's controls are accessible on a phone's lock screen.
Free music service Songza kept its announcement brief, posting on Twitter: "We're happy to announce that Songza is now available on Google #Chromecast! #Android #iOS." The company also announced over 75 holiday playlists.
RealNetworks added Chromecast support to its RealPlayer Cloud iOS and Android apps, letting viewers cast their own personal videos to their televisions. Introduced in September, RealPlayer Cloud lets users store 2GB of video in the cloud with free accounts, or 25GB of video for $49.99 per year. Account holders can cast videos stored locally or in the cloud (but, sadly, they can't cast videos stored in iTunes).
Other apps that have recently announced Chromecast support include Revision 3, PostTV, Red Bull.TV, Viki, and BeyondPod. Viewers can also cast their personal media with the Plex and Avia apps.
