NASA Explores the Challenges of Streaming Mobile Video

Streaming Media conferences always have an impressive guest list. At the recent Streaming Media East show in New York City, Bryan Walls, deputy program manager for NASA's Imagery Experts program, took part in a session on the challenge of sreaming mobile video in the enterprise. Walls told attendees how the space agency gets its video to viewers.

"As the Shuttle went away and we transitioned to digital broadcasting we moved to three channels. One's a public channel, one is education content, and one is specifically for the media," Walls said. "For delivery, we are doing RTMP to our CDN, which is pretty typical. From the CDN, we're using HLS. For our embedded player we're using JW Player, which is using HLS and it can use HLS and Flash so it plays on computers in the browser, pretty much anybody that has Flash, as well it goes directly to iOS. HLS plays fairly well on Android."

But those aren't NASA's only options. It has other channels it uses for higher-profile content.

"Besides those three channels we also have two channels that go directly out: the Space Station view and a high-definition HD view from Space Station. Those go directly to Ustream," Walls explained. "Then we also support streaming events. If it's a big event we will go to NASA TV, in which case we've already got the persistent streams in place. But we also do a lot of educational events."
