Jan De Cock

Director of Codec Development, Synamedia

Jan De Cock joined Synamedia as Director of Codec Development in 2019, where he is leading an international team of video experts who develop the in-house codecs that power Synamedia’s real-time encoding products. Before that, he served as manager of the Video and Image Encoding team at Netflix (Los Gatos, CA), where he was involved in the introduction of optimized video streams, new codecs and profiles, A/B testing of video innovations and the evaluation of codecs and standards. Before joining Netflix, he was active as Ph.D. researcher, post-doctoral researcher, and assistant professor at Ghent University (Belgium), where he worked on a variety of national and international projects in collaboration with academic and industrial partners. He held postdoctoral fellowships from Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO) and Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO). While in academia, he performed research on a range of topics in the field of video compression, including transcoding, scalable video coding, and high efficiency video coding. Jan was general co-chair of the 2018 Picture Coding Symposium (PCS), and holds M.Sc. (2004) and Ph.D. (2009) degrees in Computer Science Engineering from Ghent University, where he also graduated in 2017 as M.Sc. in Business Engineering, majoring in Finance.
