AVI
Acronym:Audio Video Interleave
An early audio-video container format that is still in use today, AVI had a number of limitations, including an inability to handle several forms of variable bitrate content, inconsistent implementation of a standard timecode, and inability to use interframe compression (the type needed by MPEG-4 and H.264). Microsoft replaced AVI as a container format with its Windows Media (WMV) but AVI lived on as a mini DV (DV-AVI) storage container, with DV-AVI Type 2 being the most popular for DV editing.
