Hi8

The analog video tape format successor to the 8mm video format. Not to be confused with 8mm film, although Sony capitalized on the 8mm film name to draw attention to 8mm and Hi8 as potential replacements for the competing VHS cassette. Hi8 had better recording and playback signal, gaining a level of popularity before being superseded by Digital8.
