Lossy Compression

Lossy compression denotes the fact that some visual or auditory information is discarded in the compression process, primarily to lower the file size for storage or streaming. While the majority of compressions are lossy, a number of newer codecs are able to achieve visually lossless images while still bringing the overall bitrate or storage size down to a manageable level.
