AEG Digital Media Brings Live Broadcasting to the Cloud

AEGDM enables global transmission of live content utilizing Amazon Web Services

L.A., CA(13 Sep 2013)

AEG Digital Media (AEGDM) announces today the first truly cloud-based video transport and ingest solution utilizing Amazon Web Services (AWS). The technology provides an end-to-end workflow for live video broadcasts leveraging AEGDM’s Online Broadcast Center, for signal acquisition via satellite, and transport via AEGDM’s global private fiber network into the AWS cloud. Allowing AEGDM customers to use AWS gives them the ability to get live video content into the cloud immediately to take advantage of the flexibility, scalability and cost savings it has to offer.

AEG Digital Media’s Los Angeles based Online Broadcast Center, a facility that supports the delivery of video around the world, will be the entry point to the cloud. The broadcast center will create a bridge that allows broadcasters using AEGDM’s solutions to connect with and use AWS’ global regions to lower cost, increase flexibility, and provide workflow efficiencies for live content to enable a seamless transition to Video on Demand and allowing for hosted and managed origin, encoding, transcoding and CDN services.

AEGDM will streamline the live online broadcast workflow, virtualizing the broadcast transport layer using AWS, for live linear services and live ad-hoc events. The solution eliminates the need for publishers to coordinate with multiple third parties traditionally involved in video transport and broadcast.

“Broadcasters are eager to use the superior cloud computing and storage capabilities AWS offers,” said Chris Roach, head of business development at AEGDM. “Now, with AEG Digital Media’s Online Broadcast Center and global fiber network, they have an easy, efficient way to transport their content to the world, while realizing the business benefits of using AWS.”

AEGDM will manage and support the process of delivering transcoded live video to AWS via high-speed fiber connections, where it can be further processed and delivered to any screen using adaptive bitrate technologies. Once content is ingested, customers can leverage the scale, elasticity, and security of the AWS platform. This can help with media use cases including storage and archiving, live and on-demand encrypted delivery, live ad-insertion, and big data analysis, and global delivery, with support for FCC regulations such as closed captioning and multi-language audio.

“Broadcasters were some of the earliest companies embracing the cloud, and the advantages it offers, to better serve content to their customers and to offer viewers a richer multimedia experience. AEGDM’s expertise in signal acquisition coupled with its use of Amazon Web Services’ cloud platform further enables broadcasters to virtualize their online broadcast centers by leveraging the power of the cloud, while simultaneously increasing their business agility.” said Mark Ramberg, Global Digital Media Business Strategy at Amazon Web Services.

By leveraging peering relationships with the Online Broadcast Center at all major global POPS, customers have the ability to ingest feeds directly into AWS from any location worldwide. The solution is available immediately and will be showcased at IBC 2013.
