AWS Introduces CDI and JPEG XS Support for AWS Elemental MediaConnect

Portland(28 May 2021)

Today AWS unveiled support for AWS Cloud Digital Interface (AWS CDI) flows in its AWS Elemental MediaConnect high-quality live video transport service, as well as JPEG XS video input/output support for MediaConnect CDI flows. Additionally, JPEG XS encoding and decoding is now supported by the AWS Elemental Live on-premises encoder via the 2.21.3 GA software release.

MediaConnect CDI flows make it easy for broadcasters and content owners to build uncompressed video workflows in the AWS Cloud, using MediaConnect to link different products and services together into a virtualized live video production system. Using MediaConnect CDI flows, additional on-demand live video production capacity can be built at a fraction of the cost of traditional on-premises capital investment, with users paying for transport only as used. MediaConnect CDI flows also support uncompressed video transport up to UHD 2160p60 at a latency between nodes of only 1 frame, as well as JPEG XS video input and output. This means that AWS Direct Connect can efficiently be used to bridge on-premises SDI and SMPTE 2110 video networks to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) VPC live video networks. Using JPEG XS can also reduce cloud video bandwidth by up to 90% without sacrificing quality or latency.

AWS Elemental MediaConnect is a reliable, secure, and flexible transport service for live video that enables broadcasters and content owners to build live video workflows and securely share live content with partners and customers. MediaConnect helps customers who run 24x7 TV channels or stream live events transported by high-bitrate live video streams into, through, and out of the AWS Cloud in a fraction of the time and cost of satellite or fiber services. It can function as a standalone service or within a larger video workflow that includes other AWS services, including AWS Elemental Media Services. AWS Elemental Live is a reliable, feature rich, on-premises appliance and software media transcoder serving a variety of IP video workloads and is a perfect complement to MediaConnect, providing a simple solution to bridge on-premises and cloud uncompressed video networks.

For information on how MediaConnect flows can be used with AWS CDI, visit the MediaConnect documentation.
