Aspera fasp high-speed transfer now available on Harmonic Media Application Server

Combined solution enables high-speed secure transfer and routing of file-based media and metadata delivering more content to more devices in less time

Las Vegas - NAB 2013(05 Apr 2013)

Aspera, Inc., creators of next-generation technologies that move the world’s big data at maximum speed, today announced Harmonic has embedded Aspera fasp in its Media Application Server (MAS), the core of the company’s media asset management platform, enabling high-speed ingest, distribution, and transfer of full resolution media and metadata as part of global automated file-based workflows.

MAS is a service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based platform that hosts and coordinates applications that comprise an enterprise-class content management, preparation and delivery platform, providing a common control center for all media processing tasks including transfers, transcoding, caption processing, file-based quality control and archive management. Aspera fasp transfer software can move file-based media of all sizes, securely, at high-speed, across global distances, and can be easily embedded thanks to an open architecture and rich set of APIs. The combined solution allows complex workflows to be orchestrated and enforced, allowing quick and efficient routing of content to the intended destination.

MAS gives a single virtualized and federated view of all managed storage to simplify the management of media assets across an enterprise. Comprehensive and configurable metadata management tools enable rich categorization and organization capabilities, ensuring that content can be located and repurposed with ease.

“Harmonic's integration leverages the latest API offerings from Aspera to provide dynamic, seamless access to any number of local or remote Aspera servers. The result is greatly accelerated file movement over wide area connections irrespective of latency or packet loss. The Aspera Node API allows developers to interact with remote Aspera file systems while the Aspera Web Service API gives developers access to both ongoing and historical transfer data,” said Mike Flathers, chief technologist, Aspera Developer Platform. “Harmonic has done a superb job of leveraging these APIs into their MAS integration to provide a very intuitive and effective user experience.”

“MAS incorporates best of breed third-party technologies to give our customers the greatest possible user experience and most value to their businesses,” said Christopher Braehler, product manager, media management applications, Harmonic. “Aspera is the industry standard for file transfer and workflow automation, and a critical component in enabling global media organizations to collaborate. Their APIs allowed us to quickly integrate these features and bring greater value to our clients around the globe.”

Aspera will be demonstrating Harmonic’s Media Application Server, powered by Aspera fasp, at NAB in the Aspera booth SL9716.
