AuthenTec and Harmonic Deliver Secure End-to-end Video Distribution Platform for Apple and Android Mobile Devices
Melbourn, FL(02 Sep 2011)
AuthenTec (NASDAQ: AUTH), a leading provider of security and identity management solutions, and Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced the joint development of DRM solutions that work seamlessly with Harmonic video encoders to enable streaming of PlayReady multimedia content on Apple and Android mobile phones and tablets. The combined hardware and software solution allows content providers and distributors to protect and deliver live streaming and on-demand video content directly to mobile device users.
"With the proven encryption key technology of AuthenTec's DRM Fusion offerings working in concert with our family of encoders, customers can encrypt live video on the fly and play it back smoothly on the appropriate end user device," said Thierry Fautier, Senior Director, Convergence Solutions at Harmonic Inc. "AuthenTec ensures end-to-end content protection so that carriers and content providers can focus on delivering compelling programming while AuthenTec encryption ensures their content is protected and delivered for live playback on a tablet or mobile phone."
"Harmonic and AuthenTec worked closely together to solve the problem of delivering content to mobile device users viewing live programming," said Dr. Simon Blake-Wilson, Vice President of AuthenTec Embedded Security Solutions. "Through the joint offering, content providers can apply carrier-grade PlayReady protection to content on the fly, delivering on the promise of bringing sports and other live programs to mobile phone and tablet users as the action unfolds. This is another of the many offerings AuthenTec provides to enhance mobile security and user identity."
When live content reaches a Harmonic video encoder, a request is sent to an AuthenTec-enabled DRM server for encryption keys. Video is then encoded and encrypted in PlayReady format and sent to authorized end users for smooth playback on a tablet or phone equipped with an AuthenTec DRM agent. The complete solution is available now and will be demonstrated at Stand #1.B20, Hall1 at IBC2011 to be held at RAI Amsterdam from September 9-13. AuthenTec's DRM Fusion Server and Agent support Microsoft PlayReady, Windows Media DRM, Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) and UltraViolet standards. The Agent is available as a downloadable application for Android and Apple phone and tablet users. As an embedded solution, it is available on Android and many other embedded platforms for mobile phone, set-top box and other OEMs. AuthenTec also offers an end-to-end media security solution through its DRM Fusion Server for carriers and network service providers. AuthenTec's DRM Fusion Server enables the entire DRM process, encompassing content protection, rights creation, rights and condition management and license generation and delivery.
AuthenTec's complete security offering includes fingerprint sensors, identity management software, hardware IP, and encryption software for mobile and networking applications. AuthenTec's solutions ensure security and user identity from the client to the cloud, and are deployed by the world's leading companies including Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Fujitsu, HBO, HP, IBM, Motorola, Orange, Samsung, Siemens, and Texas Instruments among many others.
