Caton partners with Osprey Video for integrated encoding and delivery

Low latency solution delivered for major international sports event

Singapore(15 Mar 2023)

Caton Technology, a pioneer in next-generation IP network transport solutions, has formed a partnership with Osprey Video to provide an integrated encoder and decoder which connects direct to IP circuits using Caton Transport Protocols (CTP). The integration was initially developed in response to a user request around a large worldwide sporting event.

The combined solution will be demonstrated on the Osprey booth (W1931) at NAB 2023 (Las Vegas Convention Center, 16 – 19 April).

The partnership involves integrating CTP into the Osprey Talon 4K encoder and decoder. These are compact, cost-effective hardware devices providing high quality conversion from linear feeds into IP, at extremely low latency.

By embedding CTP into the Talon 4K encoder, users have a single point device which takes the source feed (at up to 12G SDI or HDMI), encodes it to H.264 or H.265, and packages it for CTP to provide secure transport over IP circuits, including the public internet. At the receiving end, the Talon 4K decoder takes in the stream and delivers SDI or HDMI into the broadcast infrastructure.

The mobility of the Osprey solution means that it can be readily packaged for delivery in a tight space such as an outside broadcast truck, in a control room, connected to a camera, or as part of the master control in front of a stage. Both Osprey and Caton focus on achieving very low latency, so the solution is extremely practical for high profile sports, as well as entertainment and other live events to be seen worldwide.

“Our goal is for our encoders and decoders to be platform agnostic,” said Scott Whitcomb, chief revenue officer at Osprey Video. “We were getting asked repeatedly to support Caton CTP, and we showed a proof of concept for a major broadcaster last year. Since then we have continued to work with Caton, using their API to build a tight integration, and we are thrilled to be offering this as a full solution to our mutual customers.”

Paul Weiser, vice president of worldwide sales & marketing at Caton Technology added “We share the same core values with Osprey: we want to provide a set-and-forget system that will run securely and accurately 24/7 for as long as is needed; and we want to deliver low latency and very high quality at an affordable price point. This is a great partnership for us, and we look forward to seeing it develop.”
