Haivision's Furnace System Enables Simple, Flexible Live IP Video Delivery Campuswide at the University of Chicago

Cost-Effective Solution Supports Live Video Delivery Using Established IP Network

MONTREAL and CHICAGO(09 Aug 2010)

Haivision Network Video today announced that the University of Chicago is using the Haivision Furnace(TM) IP video delivery system to make 14 live broadcast channels available to most buildings across campus, and to support the broadcast of live on-campus events to more than 14,000 students and staff. The Haivision Furnace system has allowed the university to leverage its campuswide IT infrastructure for flexible, cost-effective delivery of live video, with smooth performance on any platform and minimal maintenance requirements.

"We needed to find an affordable, easy-to-use alternative to video delivery over coax, and Haivision's Furnace system allows us to use existing infrastructure to make video available across the campus to any connected user on any type of computer," said Ifeanyi Okonma, streaming media administrator, IT Services - Scholarly Technology, University of Chicago. "We look forward to building on the capabilities of the system to enable even more effective use and sharing of the university's educational resources."

The Haivision Furnace IP video delivery system gives users on the University of Chicago network access to broadcast TV (SD) and live coverage of on-campus events, either with Haivision's "zero footprint" InStream(TM) soft player on their desktops and laptops, or via Haivision's Stingray(TM) set-top boxes (STBs) installed in common areas and various university departments. The InStream player requires no software or hardware installation, thus supporting flexible video delivery with a lower burden for IT staff.

The University of Chicago's Office of University Communications has used the Furnace system to enable viewing of live events such as groundbreakings, ceremonies, and presentations by distinguished visitors to the university.

The Furnace system is a complete solution for end-to-end video-over-IP distribution. The powerful integrated solution supports Haivision encoding systems to manage and distribute live video to computers and set-top boxes, to create scheduled playback channels for enterprise TV and signage, and to record content and deliver video on demand in a secure, easy-to-use system. Haivision's Furnace Portal Server controls the direct and secure distribution of video to both the InStream player and the Stingray STB, and the Furnace Playback Manager supports scheduled channels for IP video broadcast and signage.
