Harmonic's ProStream 1000 with ACE Technology Completes Microsoft Mediaroom Compliance Testing

Amsterdam - IBC 2010(10 Sep 2010)

Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that its ProStream(TM) 1000 stream processor with ACE(TM) transcoding technology has completed compliance testing for the Microsoft Mediaroom Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) platform. Testing was administered by Microsoft Corp. as part of the Microsoft Mediaroom Interoperability and Qualification Lab (IQ Lab) program, which is intended to enable the ongoing interoperability and compliance of headend equipment used in deployments of Microsoft Mediaroom. Harmonic powers the video headend infrastructure for a majority of Microsoft Mediaroom customers worldwide.

ProStream 1000 with ACE is the first high density HD/SD broadcast transcoder to complete Mediaroom compliance testing. ACE supports HD and SD, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video and audio transcoding of up to 20 HD or 80 SD channels in a compact and power-efficient one rack-unit (1-RU) chassis. The platform’s industry-leading density offers Mediaroom customers a highly cost-effective and flexible compression solution that delivers excellent video quality.

Microsoft Mediaroom is an award-winning IPTV platform that powers the cloud for network operators and service providers to deliver entertainment experiences across all the screens in their subscribers’ lives. More than five million households worldwide subscribe to TV services powered by Mediaroom.

"Microsoft Mediaroom is significantly reducing hardware and management costs and speeding time to market for service operators with key features such as server virtualization. Harmonic's ProStream 1000 with ACE, thanks to its dense bulk transcode capabilities, likewise helps to minimize the cost of new Mediaroom deployments or service expansion by existing Mediaroom service operators," said Steve Koepp, Senior Manager, Business Development, Media Platforms Business, Microsoft Corp.

"A growing number of Harmonic's video processing systems have been tested as compliant for Mediaroom, meeting the evolving needs of IPTV service providers," said Yaniv Ben-Shushan, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Harmonic Inc. "We have worked with Microsoft on numerous deployments to ensure high quality, bandwidth-efficient IPTV video services, and the ProStream 1000 with ACE technology is a cost-effective, dense and highly flexible solution for operators choosing to deploy Mediaroom."

Harmonic's portfolio of market-leading video processing solutions, including ProStream 1000 with ACE, will be on display at Harmonic’s stand #1.C61 during IBC 2010 in Amsterdam, September 10-14.
