Intertrust and Fastly Deliver Integrated Solution for Protection of Direct-to-Consumer Streaming Content

Fastly’s Edge Cloud CDN Integrates With ExpressPlay DRM for the Highest Quality Streaming Experience With Hollywood-Grade Content Protection

San Francisco, CA(21 Apr 2020)

Intertrust, the pioneer in Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology, announced an integrated solution with global edge cloud platform provider Fastly, Inc. (NYSE:FSLY). The partnership incorporates Intertrust’s ExpressPlay DRM, a multi-DRM cloud service, with Fastly’s on-the-fly packaging (OTFP) service.

The combined direct-to-consumer solution means video service operators can now deploy a single copy of an assetprotected by the powerful fusing of ExpressPlay DRM and Fastly OTFP servicesinto MPEG-DASH, HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), or HTTP Dynamic Streaming (HDS), with all of the standard codec and container formats delivered across multiple content delivery networks (CDN).

Kenny Huang, general manager for Intertrust Media Solutions, commented, “Compliant with MovieLabs Enhanced Content Specification (ECP) and fully compatible with Fastly’s Media Shield, this joint solution effortlessly supports multi-CDN use cases for an improved quality of experience (QoE), while simultaneously matching business goals around lower churn and longer play times.”

“As media companies continue to evolve beyond traditional print and broadcast to new digital models, they are looking to high-impact technologies and services that help them scale and monetize to remain competitive,” said Lee Chen, Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategic Partnerships at Fastly. The company’s modern network architecture and edge cloud capabilities, such as request collapsing and load balancing, provide a crucial advantage by supporting live and high-volume traffic with minimum lag and latency.

Chen added, “Even when breaking news or big sporting events spike demand, this integrated solution gives viewers and readers access to the media content they desire without skipping a beat.”

Streaming video is consumed on a wide variety of devices and players, requiring support for multiple formats. The result is an often cumbersome content packaging workflow that is difficult to implement, test, and maintain. The solution from Fastly and Intertrust provides a one-stop, highly scalable, and secure option for the packaging and delivery of protected content to virtually any device without compromising download or streaming performance.

ExpressPlay DRM is the only multi-DRM cloud service that supports all five major DRM platformsApple FairPlay Streaming, Google Widevine, Adobe Access, Microsoft PlayReady, and open-standard Marlin DRM. The keys used by Fastly’s on-the-fly packager are securely stored by the ExpressPlay Key Management Service (KMS), which is fully integrated with ExpressPlay License servers. ExpressPlay also offers session-based watermarking and advanced anti-piracy services for further content and revenue protection. More information on the Intertrust/Fastly solution can be found in this brief.
