Los Angeles Times Originals Video Channel Now Available on Roku
LOS ANGELES(16 Oct 2014)
The Los Angeles Times today announced the launch of its Los Angeles Times Originals channel on Roku, a leading streaming platform with more than 10 million streaming players sold in the U.S. Roku's products are the first streaming devices to offer The Times’ distinctive video productions, which are now available to its customers through its family of Roku® players and Roku TV™ as well as viewers at latimes.com/video.
“No one covers L.A., California, and the world as uniquely as the Los Angeles Times, and video is a key medium we use to bring our storytelling to life,” said Colin Crawford, Times deputy managing editor, visual journalism. “The new Originals channel will give Roku’s customers access to the best of our compelling, award-winning video productions.”
“The Los Angeles Times Originals channel delivers interesting, unique video to Roku customers and is a significant addition to what we feel is the best collection of news content available on a streaming platform,” said Ziba Kaboli-Gerbrands, Director of Content Acquisition for Roku. “We believe customers choose Roku over other streaming platforms because of the breadth and quality of the entertainment options available, and this is another great example of a channel they will only find on Roku.
The new channel on Roku shares a name with the Originals banner under which The Times produces and distributes its short and long-form productions and will initially include Entertainment, Lifestyle, Sports, and Documentaries categories. In addition, a Breaking News category will dynamically appear when major news events occur.
“It’s a priority for us to extend the reach of Los Angeles Times Originals across platforms where video is consumed,” said Jennifer Collins, Tribune Publishing’s vice president, digital development. “Distribution with Roku puts us in front of an active and engaged audience that streams content on their Roku players an average of 48 hours per month.”
Highlights from more than 70 videos available at launch include the following:
- “The Envelope Screening Series”– Times entertainment writers in lively and revealing behind-the-scenes discussions with the stars and filmmakers of award season hopefuls (Entertainment)
- “Space Shuttle Endeavour Remembered” – charting the course of the spacecraft from its construction to its final trek through L.A. and its new home at the California Science Center (Documentaries)
