Vidyo Licenses H.264 Annex G (SVC) Essential Patent to MPEG-LA Patent Pool

Affirms Vidyo’s Leadership in Open Standard Communications

HACKENSACK, NJ (28 Nov 2012)

Vidyo, Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced that it has been admitted as a licensor in MPEG LA’s H.264 patent pool. Being included in the portfolio of essential patents underscores the leadership position Vidyo has taken in the effort to standardize scalable video coding in both the existing H.264 SVC codec and the emerging HEVC (H.265) codec. Since its launch in 2008, Vidyo has consistently led the industry shift to SVC in video communications, and is today delivering the “gold standard” for interoperability among SVC implementations.

MPEG LA, LLC is an independent organization that creates platforms of grouped patents that make protected intellectual property safe and easy to access by third-party users. Such patent “pools” provide sub-licenses to third parties.  Vidyo’s inclusion in this pool offers easier access for licensing and implementing interoperable standards-based SVC products.

“From the inception of the company, Vidyo has been committed to open standards-based communication,” said Ofer Shapiro, co-founder and CEO of Vidyo. “Our submission and acceptance into the MPEG LA patent portfolio is further evidence of Vidyo’s pro-active role in promoting interoperability, sharing our continued investment in R & D, and of our long-term leadership in this field.”

Vidyo’s SVC Technology Leadership

Vidyo has continued to make standards-essential technology available to the industry through the ITU-T, IETF, and UCIF, and plays a significant role in VCEG, JVT, and its successor, JCT-VC. Over the years the company has won numerous awards and gained worldwide recognition for breathing new life into the video conferencing and collaboration market, with its unique approach to visual communication. As Vidyo continues to drive standards in video communications, companies in the market have followed suit and have now acknowledged that “scalable video” is needed to support the future growth of all video communications.  Vidyo’s steadfast commitment to facilitating the interoperability of the H.264 SVC standard has been instrumental to making this vital technology available to the growing number of third parties who seek to license it.

The Vidyo communication and collaboration platform is software-based, highly flexible and can be easily customized for individual enterprise and vertical market video conferencing needs. The patented VidyoRouter architecture employs Adaptive Video Layering, which dynamically optimizes the video for each endpoint leveraging H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC)-based compression technology and Vidyo’s IP. Adaptive Video Layering eliminates the MCU and offers unprecedented error resiliency, low latency rate and resolution-matching that enables natural, affordable, high-quality video to work over the Internet, LTE and 4G networks. The platform allows users to quickly leverage the latest hardware innovations and new consumer devices, making it uniquely attractive to partners. Vidyo has been active driving H.264 SVC and SIP videoconferencing interoperability in various standards bodies since 2005.  Vidyo platform partners include NintendoRicohPhilips and OTN.

Vidyo has also been actively participating in the HEVC standardization process, encouraging the standards bodies to extendHEVC to support scalability and by making technical contributions with proposed scalable coding tools.
