Watch Out, Hulu and Netflix: Social Video Platform Zeewe TV Zooms to One Million Users

Thanks to a cross-platform HTML5 experience, 80 percent of new users come from mobile

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.(11 Jul 2012)

Today Movile, the largest mobile content provider in Latin America, is announcing that its social video platform Zeewe TV has reached one million users. Surprisingly, the HTML5-based service has grown significantly faster on mobile compared to the social graph of Facebook PC.

Already hugely popular in Latin America, Movile is now targeting the global Latino market, starting with Latino audiences in the U.S. As the only video viewing and sharing platform built in HTML5, Zeewe TV allows for flexibility between PC and mobile use and aims to challenge Netflix and Hulu in the video streaming and sharing arena.

Zeewe TV’s unique monetization strategy is also taking off, with 25 percent of users opting in to pay for premium content. Thanks to partnerships with mobile carriers, Zeewe TV users don’t pay for Internet data to watch video hosted on Zeewe TV servers. This means that a higher percentage of users are willing to upgrade and pay a fee for full access to Zeewe TV’s premium content, which comes from high quality partners like MTV, Euro 2012, VH1 and Mixmag.

“Zeewe’s growth is a result of great content paired with the decision to focus on HTML5, which allows us to deploy the service across all platforms. HTML5 fueled our distribution on mobile even when Facebook changed its policy and cut back on consumer video sharing,” said Eduardo Henrique, Movile’s co-founder and head of the company’s U.S. operations.

In light of Facebook’s recent restrictions on viral sharing, Movile’s mobile strategy is a key alternative—and increasingly profitable—means of distribution. Movile will continue to partner with high quality carriers and content providers around the world.
