Wowza Media Server 2 to Flaunt More New Capabilities at IBC2010

On-the-fly DRM encryption, automated multicast push, and WebM live streaming to be included in WMS2

Evergreen, CO(30 Aug 2010)

Wowza Media Systems today announced the IBC2010 preview of three upcoming capabilities for its highly popular Wowza Media Server2 product. These capabilities - on-the-fly DRM encryption, automated multicast push, and WebM live streaming - help unify users' streaming infrastructure while expanding reach to more media platforms and more screens. Wowza has previously announced IBC2010 previews for two other Wowza Media Server 2 features: enhanced monitoring currently offered in the Wowza for Amazon EC2 license edition, and upcoming support for Adobe Flash HTTP dynamic streaming.

Wowza Media Server 2 is a high-performance video engine that unifies delivery of live and on-demand H.264 video or AAC/MP3 audio streams to multiple clients and devices, eliminating the need for specialized, client-specific servers and encoders. With on-the-fly DRM encryption, Wowza Media Server 2 will be able to dynamically apply PlayReady and Apple AES-128 protection to any live or on-demand H.264 stream, enabling simultaneous delivery of premium content to both the Silverlight 4 smooth streaming player and Apple iPhone/iPad and other HLS-compatible devices. The Wowza PlayReady implementation will support direct interface with customer-owned PlayReady license servers, or third-party PlayReady license providers such as EZDRM.

Wowza Media Server 2's automated multicast push capability eases provisioning of streams for delivery over multicast-capable networks. Multicast is often used in enterprise deployments. The playback is compatible with many clients including the Silverlight 4 multicast player, QuickTime player, VLC, and MPEG-TS set-top boxes. For intranets that lack multicast capability and for Internet delivery, Wowza can be provisioned to automatically fall back to unicast. Wowza Media Server 2 can also deliver all streams simultaneously in multicast and unicast.

Finally, Wowza will demonstrate Wowza Media Server 2's ability to perform live WebM streaming using VP8-encoded video with HTML5 video tag playback in Firefox 4.0 Beta, Opera 10.6+, and other compatible browsers. Wowza Media Server 2 already supports HTML5 streaming to Apple iOS and other HLS-compatible devices such as the Roku player, which will also be showcased at IBC. As HTML5 standards and practices continue to evolve, Wowza will continue to address unified video delivery to different browsers and compatible devices.

Wowza Media Server 2 makes it easy and affordable to deliver a high volume of audio and video content over IP networks, either public or private, to desktop/laptop computers (Web TV), mobile phones/tablets (mobile TV), or IP set-top boxes (IPTV). Improved economies of scale and reduced encoding, storage, and management expense mean radio and television broadcasters, content delivery networks (CDNs), and other media enterprises save money, improve efficiency, and streamline infrastructures. As a unified media server, Wowza Media Server 2 also simplifies personnel training, further reducing media delivery expense.
